About Brooks:

After coming to Portland from Charlotte, North Carolina, in 1991, Brooks Schmit began her study of watercolor.  After many classes and workshops, she initiated independent study with an emphasis on color and design.  The motivation in her work is to convey the sense of beauty in our everyday surroundings, and she believes beauty is like laughter; it's not necessary to sustain life, but it certainly improves it.

The glow of transparent watercolor when juxtaposed with opaque or multi-layered backgrounds of heavily pigmented color is realized in many of her works.  Her compositions are intricately composed to lead the eye around the painting using negative space and overlapping similar shapes.  Her aim is to entice the viewer with simple lines, beautiful color, and motion, animating her work with electric energy.
