From Nikki:

The art I create takes a step, or several steps, away from realism into the realm of abstract representation and increasingly, abstraction.  When I look at the world I’m attracted to color and light, shape, and texture.  These are what inspire me as an artist. They are the elements I use to express my feelings for a subject and to evoke a response in the viewer.  Much of the time, my art is based on an image in my mind or a memory of a place or time, rather than a subject before me.

I first started painting primarily in watercolor and gouache, but now frequently use acrylics and other media to achieve the finished result.  These may include collage, pastel, ink, transfers, etc.  Whatever it takes to create interest and get the result I’m looking for.  In my collages I use mostly rice papers or tissue, which I paint with watercolor or acrylic.   Sometimes I incorporate found papers and other objects.

Over the years, I’ve studied with a number of well known artists who, along with my friends in The Art Pack, have helped me to better define myself as an artist and to clarify how I approach the making of art.
